The Spurs blew out the terrible Magic in the opener, behind 19 from Devin Vassell, but it was not really like he led the team. The win was a series of moments in which one of the baby stars (small ‘s’) took the reins for a while and showed out. Yes, DV did grab a couple of highlights for himself by stealing the ball and getting a dunk and then hitting a three to beat the buzzer a few moments later.
Seven dudes were in double-figures. That is partly because the Magic are bad, but also because there was a lot of good stuff from a balanced attack. We saw some of that Doug McDermott spot-up stuff we wanted, but he also mixed in an up-and-under on a drive that is a bonus from him. Is he getting that against an Anthony Davis? I don’t know. It really does not matter at this very moment.
The Playoffs are about finding A Guy, the regular season is about building consistency and belief and rhythm. So far, so good.
